The Problem

Nowadays, food deliveries are becoming more and more popular, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lockdowns alongside social distancing have made it important for millions of people around the world to be able to use food deliveries in a convenient and efficient way. There are good options for food deliveries apps, but this is not the case for takeout from the place itself. This action is usually made together with a human being which receives the order and sends it for preparation, causing a slower service, long line of people and more chances for human mistakes.

The Idea

My solution is an app kiosk which completes the food deliveries experience and enables the user to order food from the place itself in an efficient way. Customers can choose what they want from the menu on the touch screen, then pay with a card or with the app.

What's on the market?

The most known self ordering experience began with McDonald's.
It is an interactive experience which provides an efficient ordering process, both for the customer and for the restaurant. More and more restaurants and food counters began to adapt the digital kiosk idea and today we can see it in more and more places.

In addition there are companies like 'Tabit' which provide an end to end solution for restaurant management. It includes the digital kiosk, as well as more features such as an easy to use pay system, Guest management system, Restaurant operating system for the restaurant itself and more.

A self-ordering kiosk is a good way to increase revenue in a restaurant. It helps the guests to place an order and pay in a fast and convenient way directly at a self-ordering kiosk without the need to wait in line.

Design

The design is simple and clean. I wanted to design an efficient system yet eyecatching and attractive.

Recap

It was a sunny Saturday sometime in 2020. My wife and I walked in Rothschild Boulevard in Tel Aviv when we saw a long line outside a well-known restaurant.
I noticed there is a lack of technology when a customer asks to order for take out from the restaurant itself. There was no option for self order. You have to wait for a staff member from the restaurant to take your order.
Since it happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, crowded places were not allowed. The image of long lines of people seemed bizarre to me and got stuck in my head for some time eventually leading me to think of the kiosk idea.

I enjoyed working on this project very much.
Since I finished working on this project I started to see more and more food places adding a self order kiosk to their places (mostly food counters such as Burger Runch, Rebar and more).
I believe the self order kiosks will be a major player in the food domain and soon we will get used to using them often.
